What's New

Although typical Red Wing Stoneware Company product is not the focal point of the newest display at The Red Wing Pottery Museum, it is every bit as interesting and informative as the rest of the museum.

A view into the diorama of the Mold Room circa 1961,located in the Red Wing Foundation Society Museum. The pair of 22" figurines depicted an American icon - the laconic cowboy.

This exhibit chronicles the production of two of the rarest figurines manufactured by Red Wing. Designed by Charles Murphy, the cowboys shown here are the original plaster hand-carved cowboys that were used to make the figurines.

Take a glimpse of what the pottery Model Shop would have looked like a half century, or so, ago. This recently added diorama accurately depicts the shop's setting and working atmosphere. Actual tools, models, drawings and equipment, from the Red Wing Union Stoneware Company, are displayed in the fashion in which they were used.
Lending to the authenticity of this display is the fact that it was created by individuals who actually witnessed the model shop when it was still a reality. Come visit a replica of the Model Shop!

The cowboy with his elbows out and his leg up had to be made with four molds; the hat, his arms, his leg that is up, and his body. On the arms and leg of the cowboys that are actually up, a metal rod was placed inside to keep them from breaking. The cowboys were so difficult to make that Red Wing produced less than 50 pairs.

Another outstanding diorama has been put in place by the Iowa Chapter of the Red Wing Collectors Society. Featured in the display is an amazing collection of stoneware items that pay tribute to the various mineral springs and spas in Iowa that were retreats for individuals seeking better health nearly 100 years ago.
